I am a member of Post Crossing, the internet project which allows people to exchange postcards: you send a postcard and you receive it back from a random postcrosser. After one year I came up with an amazing idea that the back of the postcard might be not less interesting than a picture on it. I thought it would be interesting to ask people to write anything they know about Lithuania or Lithuanians, to collect all these comments on one blog and to creat from them kind of e-puzzle of my native country.

Poland vs Lithuania or Poland&Lithuania?

A beautiful letter next to the postcard from Poland:

Poles haven't got clear stereotype of Lithuanians (like drinking Russian or ugly German woman), but we pin some features of you:
1.you hold a grudge against us for stealing Miskiewicz, Moniuszko and Kosciuszko
2.you are frugal, we can rely on you in finances, and you always keep promises
3.we are good friends, because we have common history. Poles like Lithuanians and believe you're good partners drink vodka together ;)
Now we hear from TV your governement isn't good for Poles in Lithuania - they don't accept Polish names of streets, but I remember after Polish Air Force crash in Smolensk your governemet designated 4 national days of mouring. It was very kind.
We have various, long and common history. Our best king Jagiello was Lithuanian. Then we brought Polish-Lithuanian Union and Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth later. Jagiello fought with Teutonic Knight and won Battle of Grunwald. I live close to Grunwald - they organize spectacular performance every year.

Believe Not To Believe...

From another side of Baltic Sea, from Oulu, Finland:

Well, Lithuania... so close to Finland but still so far away. I've heard that you guys have R-kiosks too, just like here in Finland. But I am not sure if it's true... So maybe I would survive if I someday have a chance to visit Lithuania. Well, to be honest my friend visited Vilna some time ago and she told me that you have great food (and rich food culture) but however your coffee wasn't as good as ours. Here is already two believe not to believe things why I have to check your country... maybe already next summer!

Lithuanian Basketball, Jonas Kazlauskas and Other

Impressive knowledge from Beijing, China:

Most our Chinese classmates know Lithuanian play basketball brilliant! A former coach of Chinese National Basketball Team is from Lithuania Jonas Kazlauskas. They know Lithuania is in Eastern Europe. I like history, so I know a little more. Lithuania is one of the Baltic country, capital Vilnius. Once allied with Poland and form a Federation. Then being eaten by Russian. After the October Revolution being independent again. Being eaten by Soviet Union again just before Germany occupation. Then becoming one republic in the Union till 1990, becoming the FIRST nation independent from the Soviet Union. After a conflict, the Union finally give up. Then I don't know anything, to tell you the truth.

Eat, Pray, Love... Lithuanian version

Three postcards from Perm, Russia:

National courses. Potatoes is one of the most important element of Lithuanian dish, but people also eat much fish and any pies. I heard that not numerous nation from oriental lands inhabit in country and they cook amazing meatpies which called 'kibinai', these pies are bought by tourist beside the Trakai castle.

Lithuania was a part of Rzecz Pospolita. Poles took their nearest neighbours for perilous wizards, because a lot of population lived on territory surrounded by forests and swamps.
I heard that Lithuanians had plenty of pagan Gods, more than one hundred; Perkūnas's supremacy divinity of thunder and lightening, perhaps, you know, Slavic people believed similar God what was called Perun. I like mystery story about Gediminas dream and building Vilnius (Iron wolf)... And great to hear - unusual place Cross' museum on open air situated just in Lithuania.

I would like to say few phrases about literature of your native country. When I was a child I used to enjoy Lithuanian national fairytale ''Egle's Grass-snake's Queen'', later I read excellent poem about these personages by S.Neris. I have illustrated tales' book where Lithuanian girl in folk clothes was showed... Sure I read poems by well-known Adam Mickiewisz, especially I loved 'Gražina'. But in my opinion, one of the most interesting narrative about Lithuania become P.Merime story 'Lokis', it's very exciting.

Hope Dies Last

This postcard from Switzerland brought very sad message:

Leider kenne ich dein Heimatland zu wenig, um darüber schreiben zu können.
Tut mir leid!

Is Lithuania really too tiny on European map? I am not giving up and looking forward to the next postcard... Perhaps it is yours...

Viva Latvia!

From Lansing, Michigan:

I haven't heard anything about Latvians, honestly. I assume they're mostly good people.

I am sure my Latvians friends would be very pleased by this response, but what about Lithuanians??? ;)

Where is the geographical centre of Europe?

Here we go! Thank you, Rowan! A beautiful postcard from Great Britain showing Tower Bridge under construction in 1892 and the back of this card:

I don't know so much about Lithuania. I think I once read that it is the geographical centre of Europe - is this true? A friend told me you have beautiful forests.

Talking about the geographical heart of Europe there are many countries (Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine, Belarus etc.) claiming to have it on their teritory, but Lithuania seems to have the strongest claim confirmed by the French National Geographical Institut.
In added video you can see beautiful Lithuanian forests, best wishes to your friend!

Any surprise is welcome

I can't wait for the first postcard matching to my blog.
What do you know about Lithuania or Lithuanians?
Spontaneosly. Without googling it. Without asking your friends. And please - no cheating.
If you don't know anything at all, if you have never heard that name, it is ok. It is also kind of message.

In the meantime - a short story from my own experience. In Rome, in the class of Italian language, I met one Chinese guy. It was almost 10 years ago and at that time I had a habbit that most of the foreigners didn't know that much about my country (''-Lithuania? Where it is?''). And what a surprise - that guy was so interested in Lithuania, in its history and especially ... in Samogitian horse breed, he couldn't stop talking about it. Wow! That was a real surprise. Worth to remember even after so many years.

Looking forward to a new suprise!
